Gerard was born in a high class family, his mother being a pharmacist and his father a successful businessman; but his childhood was far from easy. At age ten he lost his younger brother Joseph and his grandparents to a fatal car crash. This tragedy deeply affected Gerard’s mindset, causing him to be become emotionally detached from everyone, which in turn caused his relationship with his parents to become rather stormy. It has also interfered with his ability to form romantic relationships.



Through high school Gerard was quiet and solitary; he was difficult to talk to and only had a few friends throughout his time in school. Many people assumed because he was wealthy, he was too snobby to talk to anyone, and that assumption stuck well to his reputation.
